Mississippi Turkey Hunting

In Mississippi, we can hunt turkeys from March 15 – May 1. State guidelines only allow longbeards to be harvested during turkey seasons. The beard must be at least 6 inches long. No jakes or hens may be harvested in Mississippi. No rifles may be used. You may use a bow or shotgun. We scout heavily for turkeys before and during the season. Plus years of hunting here gives us the knowledge of where the turkeys hang out. We cut timber here every other year so our habitat changes. Turkeys like to be able to see. They don’t like thick cover. Turkeys like to roost in big timber and fly down in open areas. Therefore, when we cut our timber we have all wildlife in mind.

Success rates have averaged above 75% historically. Of all the species hunted in the Mississippi Delta, Turkeys are the ones most adversely affected by spring flooding. Timing and duration of any flood plays a significant part in the rate of annual nesting success.
